After years of running a business, it is not uncommon that an entrepreneur needs a secondary push that could shake him or her out of complacency. The starting energy that made it possible to set up a company in the first place has long dissipated in daily toil and the accumulation of responsibilities prevents business owners from finding viable ways of strengthening their core activity. More often than not, what could really do a lot of good in their situation is going back to the basics and pruning their businesses or infusing a little bit of this classic entrepreneurial spirit. In case you have forgotten, the customer is king. There is little other reason for the existence of your business than trying to bring satisfaction to people who pay for your products or services and there is never enough reminding yourself and others of this conventional wisdom. It has plenty of practical consequences, from ensuring quality control to investing in the attitude and skills of the staff to stepping up customer service.

Selling is what counts in business. If other people are not willing to pay for your goods, material or ideas, there is no way you can advance. Pay constant attention to this core of your activity and do not be afraid to take action when things go bad, regardless of what causes these inadequacies. It is simply too important to overlook or delay reaction.

Do you have a strategy for the future? Do you know where your company is heading in the short-term, mid-term and long-term perspective? As time passes, companies often fall into the trap of being reduced to what can be called a month-to-month mentality that is focused on immediate considerations. What is the last time you took some risk with your business? It is not about doing something stupid, but about energizing your employees, partners and customers. It can have to do with product or service innovation that goes one step ahead of market expectations, rather than just copying well-rehearsed solutions. It might also be connected with organizational improvement. Why not introduce some modern management system or streamline communication and cut costs by switching from landline phones to a combination of VOIP, a webcam and other high-tech novelties.
